This club is for our students who just can’t get enough of being outside and who want to learn more about the trees, animals, plants, trails and treasures we have on Morgantown Learning Academy’s 12-acre campus. We will spend every minute of our hour and half together hiking on our trail around the property and exploring our forest. While this class will be full of fun and exciting discoveries, our instructors will consistently use principles of individual responsibility, team work and good stewardship to guide our adventures.

Parents, personal responsibility is a big part of this club, so remind your child to get ready but let them pack their own gear the night before. We will be going outside in the cold weather so please email Mallards instructor, Ms. Hannah ([email protected]) if you have questions about gear. Each child needs to bring a backpack with a water bottle or camel pack and a nut-free snack with label for each adventure.

Please note:  Instructors will determine which students will advance to Mountain Mapaches based on experience and level of personal responsibility.

The Mountain Mapaches is a club for our students who have learned how to be responsible for themselves in the woods, have learned how to be respectful of nature, and are aware of the dangers in the woods. These students are ready to learn how to work as a pack. They have achieved a level of independence and have earned the instructor’s trust to venture into the woods with less supervision. This is a program for our Mountain Mallards that are ready to advance but are not yet ready to advance to Mountain Jaguares.

Parents, personal responsibility is a big part of this club, so remind your child to get ready but let them pack their own gear the night before. We will be going outside in the cold weather so please email Lauren ([email protected]) if you have questions about gear. Each child needs to bring a backpack with a water bottle or camel pack and a nut-free snack with label for each adventure.

The Mountain Zorros is our newest program for students progressing from Mtn Mapaches.  The Zorros will focus on the practical application of sur-thrival skills with particular emphasis on setting up outdoor camps with limited supplies and resources.  This will include learning practical knots, basic knife safety and using items in a survival pack.  The Zorros will have increased responsibility while at the same time, they will learn the consequences of their decisions and actions.  Zorros will have the opportunity to advance to our Cheat Mountain Campus program (summer) with instructor permission.  Each semester they will practice a a different path (Medic, Provider, or Scout) to help them decide what program they will pursue in Jags.

This advanced group has 4 different paths:  Medic, Scout, Herbalist and Provider.  Jaguares also will work towards certification (or re-certification) of Wilderness First Aid.
Students at this level are able to work through scenarios as a pack as well as begin to think about responsibility to their greater community and natural areas. We travel off of MLA campus every other Sunday to give this group a larger area to experience.

Each Jaguar will need a day pack, water bottle or camel pack, nut free snack, a compass, whistle on a cord, and other survival materials and books that they will receive in class.  Students will need to be well prepared for cold and wet weather; please contact Jen with questions ([email protected]). Parents will need to fill out transportation forms for our monthly Friday trips to Coopers Rock.  We will also have an overnight camping trip on MLA property!
