This club is for our students who just can’t get enough of being outside and who want to learn more about the trees, animals, plants, trails and treasures we have on our campus. We will spend every minute of our hour and a half together hiking on our trail around the property and exploring our forest. While this class will be full of fun and exciting discoveries, our instructors will consistently use principles of individual responsibility, team work and good stewardship to guide our adventures.

Parents, personal responsibility is a big part of this club, so remind your child to get ready but let them pack their own gear the night before. We will be going outside in the cold weather so please email Mallards instructor, Mr. Ben ([email protected]) if you have questions about gear. Each child needs to bring a backpack with a water bottle or camel pack and a nut-free snack with label for each adventure.

Please note:  Instructors will determine which students will advance to Mountain Mapaches based on experience and level of personal responsibility.   Parents will receive a checklist at the end of each semester.

Learn more about Mountain Mallards here.

*Study hall for MLA students will be 3:15p – 4p to allow time for public school and homeschool students to travel to MLA.  We will take off up the hill at 4:00p!

The Mountain Mapaches is a club for our students who have learned how to be responsible for themselves in the woods, have learned how to be respectful of nature, and are aware of the dangers in the woods. These students are ready to learn how to work as a pack. They have achieved a level of independence and have earned the instructor’s trust to venture into the woods with less supervision.

Parents, personal responsibility is a big part of this club, so remind your child to get ready but let them pack their own gear the night before. We will be going outside in the cold weather so please email Lauren ([email protected]) if you have questions about gear. Each child needs to bring a backpack with a water bottle or camel pack and a nut-free snack with label for each adventure.

The Mountain Zorros is our program for students progressing from Mtn Mapaches.  The Zorros will focus on the practical application of sur-thrival skills with particular emphasis on setting up outdoor camps with limited supplies and resources.  This will include learning practical knots, basic knife safety and using items in a survival pack.  The Zorros will have increased responsibility while at the same time, they will learn the consequences of their decisions and actions.  Zorros will have the opportunity to advance to our Cheat Mountain Campus program (summer) with instructor permission.  Each semester they will practice a a different path (Medic, Provider, Scout, or Herbalist) to help them decide what program they will pursue in Jags.

Parents, personal responsibility is a big part of this club, so remind your child to get ready but let them pack their own gear the night before. This advanced group has 4 different paths:  Medic, Scout, Herbalist and Provider.  Jaguares also will work towards certification (or re-certification) of Wilderness First Aid.  Students at this level are able to work through scenarios as a pack as well as begin to think about responsibility to their greater community and natural areas.

Each Jaguar will need a day pack, water bottle or camel pack, nut free snack, a compass, whistle on a cord, and other survival materials and books that they will receive in class.  Students will need to be well prepared for cold and wet weather; please contact Jen with questions ([email protected]) about Medic or Jason with questions about Provider ([email protected])

Wildcraft Wednesdays

Mountain SOL is continuing our new afterschool program where students can embrace their creative freedom in the woods! Wildcraft Wednesdays is an open ages class that gives students a taste of what the Jaguares Provider path is all about. Students can learn to cook on a fire, make trail markers from local materials, hunt for fossils, maintain a patch of wild berries, and more!

Wildcraft Wednesdays are open to a wide age range, and students will be able to participate equally whether they are in 4th grade or high school. Our teacher Jason taught Winter Scouts this year with a similar age range, and we expect similar students will enjoy Wildcraft Wednesdays!

Each student should bring a small backpack with water and a nut-free snack,* and a knife for those who have their Knife Safety certification. Please feel free to email Jason at [email protected] with any questions.
