❄️Winter 2024❄️

*ENROLL HERE!*

Mountain SOL offers after-school programs for all local students. All classes are priced using sliding scale tuition (within a price-range) so you can choose what you want to give to the school. Payments made above the maximum listed price are considered donations. If you would like to apply for a needs-based scholarship, please go to our Giving Goats Scholarship Fund.

All after-school programs are held on the Morgantown Learning Academy
campus unless otherwise noted – MAP HERE

Age restrictions for each group are flexible.
We work hard to make sure that kids have a good social network within their class as well as similar skill levels.
Group placement also depends on the experience and maturity of each participant.
Please contact us at [email protected] with any questions.

Critter Quest is an extension of our tracking program that uses observation, problem solving, and creativity to locate different animal species on Mountain SOL property. Each student will be given a booklet containing detailed information about each species and will earn stamps for finding three key clues: scat, tracks, and direct observation of the species (They either see it in person or catch it on camera). In each class the students will be divided into one of two randomized groups. They will have to look at their group’s remaining supplies (bait), determine what type of lure they want to construct, and the location.

We will go out in temperatures as low as 13 degrees; this limit is dictated by school insurance. All participants must know how to dress for cold weather and be responsible for themselves in this weather. Each child needs to bring a backpack, a water bottle or camel pack, a nut-free snack with a label, a flashlight with extra batteries, a trash bag, plastic sandwich bag, extra socks, and hand warmers (like Hot Hands).

*IMPORTANT* Students who are not excited about being outside in the cold and snow, and those who are not able to consistently pack their packs and take responsibility for themselves, should not sign up for this class.  If you would like our input about whether your child should participate, please feel free to contact us directly at [email protected] or [email protected].

Our Winter Scouts Intensive program is a multi-age program for Mountain Mapaches and older. Ask Jen about special instructor permission if you have a youngster interested in adventuring in the snow. With diverse ages, younger kids will be mentored and receive more direct instruction, while older youths will be allowed substantial freedom and leadership opportunities. This is an opportunity for youths of different ages who are enthusiastic about adaptability and outdoors adventures to have an incredible experience together.

We will practice winter hiking, fire-building, self-rescue techniques, construct winterized shelters with improvised and specialized materials, and build self-confidence through mutual trust and teamwork.  To thrive we will need to rely on each other, so students who sign up for this class should be ready to take responsibility for themselves and for the team.

As a prerequisite, students must be responsible for being appropriately equipped for weather as low as 13*F or rainy conditions. Each participant must be committed and mature because their preparedness and responsibility will be tested by the elements, not an instructor. If you have any questions about the class regarding prerequisites, expectations, or gear recommendations, contact the instructor, Nathan, at [email protected] or the main office at [email protected]. We will be staying indoors below 13*F as dictated by the insurance policy of Mtn SOL School.

Waterproof boots with ankle support
Wool socks (merino or smartwool)
Long johns (ideally wool)
