Go Away Stereotypes by Noah Spransy

Hi, my name is Noah and I go to Morgantown Learning Academy(MLA). I would like if  we could not look at West Virginia (WV) for its stereotypes. I would like for people to talk about how great West Virginia is and look for all the great things in our beautiful state. This would change our state for the better and not looking at it for stereotypes our state has. It would show that we’re not just a poor state, we are a gorgeous state with forest that some cities don’t have. At my school we recognize topics that most people don’t want to talk about, but it is good to talk about things like this so they don’t happen again. Also to have people judging West Virginia for all of the negative things about us, there’s a lot of positive things about West Virginia that I feel we can express good things a little bit more.

I would like to try to reduce the use of stereotypes and look at West Virginia for all the great things in our beautiful state. I have classmates saying when they go to Ohio to play hockey most of the time they’re called hillbillies and rednecks. I personally don’t know what it’s like being called hillbilly or redneck, I can imagine other people have labels for people that come from our state.

We would show that we’re not just a poor state, we are a gorgeous state with forest that some cities don’t have. We have a lot of history with forests and mountains in West Virginia. Around the 1950’s The Division of Forestry cut down more the 90% of trees in West Virginia. I know West Virginia is not perfect but we can try to flood the negative things with things that West Virginia should be know for like Coopers Rock and the highest point in West Virginia, “Spruce Knob”.

Also to have people judging West Virginia for all of the negative things about us, there’s a lot of positive things about West Virginia that I feel we can express good things a little bit more. There’re so many good things about West Virginia that no one ever take about like how the first state sales tax in the United States. West Virginia’s nickname is the Mountain State and its motto is “Mountaineers Are Always Free’’, but are we free if we are judged for our past lives.

All I and a lot of other people want is to show everyone that West Virginia is not just a poor state, it’s a state with much potential. I would like to reduce the use of stereotypes and prove West Virginia is so much better than people think it is. So I don’t just want my class learning want my class learning this, I  would like if other schools would learn this type of thing.
