Basics in Herbalism

Time: Tuesday evenings, 6:00-7:30pm

Join Hannah and a few co-hosts in learning ways to work with plants as allies for your personal health. Spend this summer getting to know about the power of plants! During each class we will discuss three plants and how to work with them in your daily routine.

Class Schedule

Tuesday, April 3 – Immune Support

$10 ~ Learn about three plants that will support your body’s ability to fight off viruses and pathogens. As an informational course there will be no take-away items for students.

Tuesday, April 10 – Spring Tonics (with Maureen Farrell)

$30 ~ Join Hannah and Maureen as they discuss blending tonics from plants regularly seen in early spring. Each student will go home with recipes and tonics to try.

Tuesday, April 17 – Spring Bitters (with Maureen Farrell)

$30 ~ Join Hannah and Maureen to learn about “bitters” and how they aid in digestion. Each student will go home with a bitters formula.

Saturday, April 21 – Medicinal Porch Garden (with Lauren Cappello) – CANCELLED

$50 ~ Lauren will teach you how to create your own medicinal “porch garden” while Hannah discusses the health benefits of each plant in your garden. Each student will create their own potted herb garden.

Tuesday, April 24 – Full Body Flow

$20 ~ Spring is the time to shrug off the slow-pace of winter. Join Hannah in learning about “lymph movers” and why they’re beneficial for feeling renewed and shrugging off winter dormancy. As an informational course there will be no take-away items for students.

Tuesday, May 1 – Lift Your Spirit!

$20 ~ Enjoy the sunshine and let happiness take over this season! Hannah will be talking about three plant allies for positivity and happiness. As an informational course there will be no take-away items for students.

Tuesday, May 8 – Sleepytime Plants

$20 ~ Need some help with winding down for sleep at night? Join Hannah as she introduces three plants that will help with relaxation and restful sleep. As an informational course there will be no take-away items for students.

Tuesday, May 15 – Mother Medicine (with Maureen Farrell)

$30 ~ In celebration of our mothers, Maureen and Hannah will be talking about plants that are most definitely allies to the hard working mothers in our lives. Students will receive samples to take home.

Tuesday, May 22 – Skin Health

$20 ~ In this class we will be discussing plants that are beneficial to skin health. We’ll learn about homemade facewash recipes and salves that help combat pimples, scars, and infection. As an information course there will be no take-away items for students.

Tuesday, June 5 – Heart Health

$20 ~ The heart is arguably the most important part of your body! Learn about plants that help to regulate blood pressure and heart rhythm. As an informational course there will be no take-away items for students.

Tuesday, June 12 – Oxymels

$40 ~ Learn about the benefits of making plant-infused honeys and apple cider vinegars. These infusions can be made into oxymels and added to syrups, mixed drinks, and more! Students will take home infusions and oxymels to use at home.

Tuesday, June 19 – Herbal Tea Blending

$30 ~ Tea blending can be fun! Join Hannah in learning about ways to blend herbs and combine flavors to make nutritious infusions and teas. Students will make their own unique blend.

Tuesday, June 26 – Wildcrafting 101

$20 ~ Many beneficial plants are growing in your backyard! Hannah will discuss common plants and how to properly identify them. We will go over ethics of wildcrafting and touch base on endangered and threatened plants. As an informational course there will be no take-away items for students.

Tuesday, July 10 – Basic Herbal First Aid

$30 ~ What’s in your first aid kit? Hannah will walk you through what’s in her herbal first aid kit and discuss plants that you can easily find and use in yours. Students will take home some materials to add to their personal first aid kits.

Tuesday, July 17 – Wild Mushrooms (with Maureen Farrell)

$30 ~ Join Maureen as she talks about the benefits of working with mushrooms that grow in our forests. We will discuss proper identification, nutritional values, and ethical harvesting.

Tuesday, July 24 – Tinctures

$40 ~ Join Hannah as she demonstrates how to create percolation and maceration tinctures. We will discuss a few of her favorite plants to tincture and their benefits. Students will choose a tincture to take home with them.

Tuesday, July 31 – Salves

$40 ~ Join Hannah as she demonstrates how to create herbal salves. We will discuss a few of her favorite plants to add in salves. Students will take home a tin of salve we make that day in class.

Tuesday, August 7 – Herbal Tea Blending

$30 ~ Tea blending can be fun! Join Hannah in learning about ways to blend herbs and combine flavors to make nutritious infusions and teas. Students will make their own unique blend.

Tuesday, August 14 – Stress Relief

$20 ~ We all know there are stress relief teas on the grocery store shelves but there are so many plants that help relieve tension and anxiety! Hannah will talk about a few plants that help with stress, the specific ways they help, and how you can learn to work with stress in certain areas of your body. As an informational course there will be no take-away items for students.

Tuesday, August 21 – Adaptogens

$20 ~ What are adaptogens and how can they help your body deal with stress, extreme changes, and low energy? Hannah will discuss a few of her favorite plant allies to help you through the day. As an informational course there will be no take-away items for students.

Tuesday, August 28 – Herbs for Women’s Health

$20 ~  Join Hannah as we chat about plants that ease menstrual cramps, nourish the uterus, and support reproductive health. As an informational course there will be no take-away items for students.

 

About the Instructors

Hannah Spencer has been studying herbalism for three years. She is currently studying with Herbal Medics University and the Commonwealth Center for Holistic Herbalism. As part of the Aurora Lights Herbal Medic Chapter, she has participated in organizing efforts for two week-long free, herbal clinics in Coal River Valley.

Maureen Farrell is an herbalist and doula in Randolph County, West Virginia. She has been studying herbalism both formally and informally for almost ten years.  Recently she has been studying with Herbal Medics University. Maureen focuses her studies and practice on women’s health.

Lauren Cappello is a senior at WVU studying horticulture with an emphasis in greenhouse management. She leads projects in the WVU greenhouse and will be providing the plants used in our “Medicinal Porch Garden” class. She has experience with permaculture and edible landscaping.

The majority of our classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6-7:30p with the exception of our Saturday, April 21 class. You can come back to this form at any time to select more classes you'd like to join. We limit each class to a maximum of 25 people unless otherwise noted.
